Interview at Science Fiction & Fantasy Writer’s Chat

Here are the highlights:

SFFWRTCHT: What kind of feedback do you get from readers/reviewers on your work, and how do you use that to improve? Or do you?

LK: Positive feedback helps motivate me to write more and faster. Constructive criticism helps me see from the reviewers POV, though sometimes their opinion doesn’t change mine. Just because a reviewer didn’t like how I wrote a character doesn’t mean I should change. I have to accept their opinion and use it to help me improve my writing, or I can accept it for what it is: an opinion. I don’t write willy-nilly, so 99% of what I write is intentional. I usually just laugh at negative reviews. What other response is there?

Interview Part I at Immortality & Beyond

Here are the highlights:

BK: How do you keep your writing different from all the other novels in this genre?

LK: I read as many books as I can and don’t write using the same story lines or ideas. Genius, eh?

Interview Part II at Immortality & Beyond

More highlights:

BK:  How did you come up with the title for your series?

LK: ‘Cause those pesky immortals are Timeless. Like a Rolex or something. (Rolex is the timeless one…right?)

BK: What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to know about you?

LK: I went to China by myself and set up a Dye Trace laboratory at Southwest University China in Chongqing, Bei Bei district. Yup. Ironically enough, I ate at KFC twice, which was twice as much as I had when I was in the U.S. (I live in KY.)

Interview at Books by their Story

Here are the highlights:

What were some of the hardest things when writing the books?

Having an off day is the hardest thing—you write and write and write, and you know it’s awful. It’s boring, and when you compare it to your other writing, you cringe. I’d like to say that writing a book is easy, but it isn’t. Only dedicated authors actually sit down and write a whole manuscript. Then there’s the editing. . . .

Interview at Hopeless Devoted Bibliophile

Here are the highlights!

If you had to choose one pivotal moment in your life that led you to being an author, what would it be?

You ready for this? Don’t laugh. I saw a cheesy paranormal romance movie called Twilight. Hey! I said don’t laugh! Okay, here’s what happened. My honey buns and I went to the threatre to catch a flick. I saw the title and remembered my mom telling me I should read the book. “Hah,” I thought, “I’ll just watch the movie.” And we did, and I had to have more. Quit laughing. Seriously. It’s not THAT funny.

Anyway, I bought all the books the next day and devoured them in a couple of days. I don’t even think I slept. I didn’t know who this author was—this Stephenie Meyer person—so I did what anyone like me would do. I Googled her. I found Midnight Sun and read it too. Disappointed it wasn’t finished, I opened a word doc and started to finish it for her. I mean, come on! The damn woman was teasing me. It wasn’t fair, I told myself. I had to know what Edward was doing all that time he wasn’t with Bella, and what he was thinking when he was with her. I HAD TO KNOW. Dunno why, I just did.

The rest is history, really. I fell in love with writing, and after finishing my version of Midnight Sun, I started to write Shadow of the Sun. Okay, seriously. You can stop laughing now. ::shakes head::

Interview at The Guide to Good Books

Here are the highlights!

Who would you say is the organization, the Society? A group of evil scientists trying to take over, or something more?

The Secret Clock Society is a group of scientists who have been creating and experimenting on projects for years, all in the hopes of one day traveling time and creating their own world sans government influence and interference. The Society doesn’t want to take over, exactly, they want Summer to travel forward in time to steal technology of the future, then send them back in the past to start their own civilization with their other creations. Would I call them mad scientists? Yes.

Here are the highlights!

If you were friends with one of your characters, who would you be friends with and why?

Lucia. She hasn’t had a chance to truly stand out in the first two books, but the third she will play a much larger role. There is a wisdom about her—a strength—that just makes her a truly intriguing character. There is so much about her: how powerful she is, her death 250 years ago, and how she helps Gabriella gain the strength needed for the coming war. She’s selfless and doesn’t try to steal the spotlight; that alone attracts me to her character.

Tell us about Soul Stalker Soul Stalker by Laura Kreitzer

Soul Stalker is the second book in the Timeless series. Gabriella deals with her proverbial death and her journey to find her Angels to tell them she’s actually alive. What she comes across is a ransacked house with a message—her Angels have been taken and now she needs to rescue the prophetess, Zola, to help her find and rescue her Angels. This book is ultra special to me. It’s dedicated to my friend Chris who killed himself in August. He was suffering from depression due to his wife leaving him. Everything about the situation was ugly—except for one thing. Chris loved his wife unconditionally. He inspired me to write some of the more intense scenes in this novel, and I was lucky enough to be able to read them to him before he passed. Even now I have a hard time reading parts of this book, but it will always hold a special place in my heart. I hope the emotions of love that Gabriella feels filters through the pages and into my readers’ souls like it does mine.

Here are the highlights!

How did your interest in writing develop?

Damn the cliché that is Stephenie Meyer. It was her series that started me writing, it was J.K. Rowling’s amazing story from rags to riches that made me want to write my own story. I admit I even cry every time I watch her documentaries.

I know you’ve also written some fan fiction stories. What impact did that experience have on your writing?

Everything. When I started, I was a horrible writer . . . maybe not horrible writing, but technically it was awful. But it started me out and over time I taught myself how to be better through constructive criticism or fan suggestions. It was some random beta reader I used for a few chapters that taught me a lot. Wish I remembered her screen name so I could thank her.

Heather of Fire and Ice interviewed Laura here on her blog.

Here are some highlights!

Do you feel like you relate to any of your characters?
I relate to each of my characters for different things. But I probably relate better to the main character the most, mainly because of her anti-social nature. With each character I brought out something in me–whether it be their evil side, their loving side, or their need to protect.
What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Write! Always write, never stop. Doesn’t matter if it is bad or in need of major help . . . WRITE! You can’t aspire to be a writer if you only dream of it. You must act upon it. And never, ever give up.

Laura was interviewed by Cari of Cari’s Book Blog found here.

Here are the highlights!

Do you feel that your series can cross over to adult fiction? Do you think it could appeal to more than just young adults?

Laura: I think my book is both! Yes, my character isn’t a teenager, but when did YOUNG ADULT mean TEENAGER? It’s not the typical story of girl goes to school, girl meets mysterious boy, girl and boy fall in love but their fate is doomed. I wrote about someone who had already come into her own person which would appeal to adults. It’s a woman who has a career already–something that young adults, even teenagers, can find appealing.

What do you want your readers to take away from reading your book?

Laura: I hope that my readers take love, friendship, and family with them when they close this book. I want them to realize how each angel, Shadow, and human made a sacrifice to save the ones they loved. Because that is what love is–a sacrifice. I want people to wish to be more like the characters in the book. Brave, loving, strong, loyal, and kind.

BCM: Do you believe in angels?

LK: I’m not a religious person, so I don’t believe in the biblical version of angels, but in a metaphorical sense I do believe that there are angelic-like people out there.

Interview at I’m a Reader Not a Writer

Here are the highlights!

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Leave the past in the past, I say! I’d love to travel into the future just for research on my newest series that is set 200 years in the future. J

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
John, Paul, Ringo, George, and my friend who has passed away, Chris. And yes, the first four are the Beatles.

Interview at The Elliot Review

Here are the highlights!

What things inspire you?

Family, friends, and fans who encourage me. Chris Emberton, my best friend, for his timeless love that still exists in my heart, even if he’s no longer with me. Lisa Langdale for being my muse and fan from the beginning. Beautifully crafted novels that have a deeper meaning than love or right vs. wrong. Music that has soul and richly sung words. People who sacrifice everything for the greater good, even when they get the short stick.

Interview at Words for Teens

Here are the highlights!

N: Do you have a favorite character in the series?
LK: I have many favorite characters in the series. Each of them I adore for different reasons. I love Gabriella’s strength, vulnerabilities, and her tenacity. Joseph’s shoulder-bumping, sixties music booty-shaking, and cheerful attitude is always a delight. Then there is Andrew’s sexiness. There really aren’t many words to describe that man. He oozes hotness. Plus, he’s got this innocent side to him; he’s tender and caring. In my eyes, he’s the perfect man. Abelie, Aiden, Lucia, Ehno, and Patrick also hold a special place in my heart. Jeez… how dare you ask such a complicated question. :D
